Recruitment & Retention

Recruitment and retention in clinical trials are critical for trial success, and start from the point of study design and protocol development.

Recruitment involves sensitizing the community and identifying potential pools of participants, followed by pre-screening, consenting and screening, and finally enrolling individuals that meet the study's inclusion criteria. Through these activities, the JHP Community Engagement Department aims to ensure a diverse and representative sample for the studies we conduct. Effective recruitment strategies utilized by JHP (Blantyre Clinical Research Site) include information sessions with healthcare providers, community engagement - such as waiting room talks and presentations at church group meetings - and partnerships nurtured through our Community Advisory Board and other local stakeholders.

It is essential to communicate the trial's purpose, benefits, and risks clearly to potential participants when encouraging interest in research participation. Well-designed recruitment strategies can help ensure the site enrolls at a smooth pace to ensure we achieve our target, and can empower potential participants with the information they need to make informed decisions about becoming a study volunteer.

Retention focuses on keeping participants engaged and committed throughout the study. High retention helps the study to achieve its research objectives and to maintain data integrity by reducing data loss. High retention is also a sign of trust and good rapport with participants. Retention starts at recruitment by enrolling participants who understand the study well.

At JHP, strategies we use to support high retention include maintaining regular telephone communications with participants, providing clear instructions about the study visit schedule, offering flexible appointment times, visit efficiency and addressing participant needs, such as transportation or childcare. Ensuring participants feel valued and supported throughout the process is key to maintaining their commitment until the study's completion. JHP has a strong focus on participant satisfaction in order to enhance our recruitment and retention efforts.
