The Mandate of the Ministry Headquarters is to set the agenda for health in Malawi in collaboration with stakeholders. The Minister of Health provides Government’s Policy directions on health matters. The Ministry Headquarters is responsible for developing, reviewing and enforcing health and related policies for the health sector; spearheading sector reforms; developing and reviewing standards, norms and management protocols for service delivery and ensuring that these are communicated to lower level institutions; planning and mobilizing health resources for the health sector including allocation and management; advising other ministries, departments and agencies on health related issues; providing technical support for supervision; coordinating research; and monitoring and evaluation.

As the first independent, degree-granting institution for research and training in public health, and the largest public health training facility in the United States,the Bloomberg School is a leading international authority on the improvement of health and prevention of disease and disability. The school's mission is to protect populations from illness and injury by pioneering new research, deploying its knowledge and expertise in the field, and educating scientists and practitioners in the global defense of human life. The school is ranked first in public health in the U.S. News and World Report rankings and has held that ranking since 1994.

Formerly College of Medicine

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (formerly College of Medicine (CoM)) was established in 1991 as a constituent college within the University of Malawi (UNIMA). It is the only medical school in Malawi. The KUHes has gradually grown from a program with an intake of 10-15 students per year and a handful of Malawian faculty, to a program with a medical student intake of on average 60 per year with 110 faculty members, of whom approximately 67% are Malawians. To date the college has graduated over 250 medical doctors. The KUHes recently commenced undergraduate courses in Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Technology in 2006.
